Maggie's external courtyard

The design for Maggie’s Centre, London, was recognised with two key Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) London Awards last night (13 May) at a special ceremony in central London. As well as winning the ‘Community Benefit’ category against nine other entries, Maggie’s was also the ‘Overall Runner Up’ in a field of more than 30 projects ranging from the renewal of St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square to the John Galsworthy Building at Kingston University and the St Paul’s Cathedral Tercentenary Project. Tony Suttill, London Region Judge, commented: “The impact is one of curiosity on the approach and astonishment, followed by pleasure, once inside. The ‘wow factor’ is considerable….There is no reception desk, and the kitchen is the focal point of the building. There are areas in which to be private, others in which to mix. Once inside it is hard to realise that one is so close to a large hospital and a very busy road – Maggie’s Centre is a haven of quiet and solitude in a busy city centre location.” Project Architect, Will Wimshurst, collected the awards on behalf of RSHP. Maggie’s Centre, London will now go forward to compete with the winners from all the other RICS regions in the grand final to be held in October. The RICS Awards highlight the very best building projects regardless of size, budget or location.”
