Parc 1, Yeouido Island, Seoul
Richard Rogers Partnership has won a competition to design a mixed-use development for Skylan Properties Korea Ltd. The £853m shopping-hotel-office complex will be situated on Yeouido Island, Seoul and will be the first facility in the city offering a place to work, shop and play.
The project has been named “Parc1”, highlighting its proximity to Yeouido Park. The park will be reflected in the complex’s two 270m glass towers - Seoul’s tallest. The 6-story glass central structure will offer retail space for over 400 shops and include two hotels.
Richard Rogers said, “I look forward to adding beautiful buildings full of vitality to this magnificent city. They will be light and transparent with a strong sense of place and character, a place for people to meet, shop and work.”
“Parc1 will be world class in all respects – architecture, environment, management and financial structure,” said Peter Walichnowski, CEO of Skylan Properties Korea Ltd. “It will be a fitting symbol for Korea’s aspirations to be a financial center.”
“The project will represent a significant foreign investment for Seoul City. During construction, it will create around 6,000 jobs. On completion, up to 5,000 jobs will be created in the shops, hotels and tower management,” he said.
“Parc1 will raise Yeouido’s profile, changing it from primarily a business center to a vibrant urban destination with shops, restaurants and leisure experiences,” he said. “At the same time we are working with our neighbors, both residents and businesses, to ensure that any concerns that they may have with the development are addressed.”
The project is currently going through architectural, environmental and traffic impact reviews by Seoul Metropolitan Government. Groundbreaking is scheduled for early 2006 with completion in 2010.
